Anusha progresses to final 16 : AIBA WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Victorious Anusha
Kodithuwakku took over China’s Jiaoling Luo in her match where she defeated her Chinese counterpart by 7-5. The fight was worked off as the Bout 86 & was not an easy fight compared to the earlier fight she had against USA’s Jessica Ponce. The first round was grabbed by Kodithuwakku, leading the fight by 2-1. However, Luo made a similar come-back grabbing the Second round of the fight (1-2) and managed to level the points at ‘Three all’.
Mighty Kodithuwakku however with a differentiated approach, managed to grab both the third and fourth rounds of the fight, 2-1. This paved the way to Kodithuwakku to be triumphant at her fight by 7-5 and enter into the Quarter Finals of the Light Fly weight (48 kg) category.
Kodithuwakku would be competing against Philippine’s Alice Kate Aparri, who had defeated Russia’s Gnevanova Svetlana by 8-3, in their Preliminary round two match. The fight with Aparri: the South East Asian games winner, would be a challenge and also a great learning curve for Kodithuwakku.
Beaten Nilmini
Nilmini Jayasinghe who fought against China’s Ren Cancan in her Flyweight (51 kg) category could not make it through to the final 16, in her weight category. Jayasinghe, who fought in the Bout 117 at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Bridgetown, was defeated by Cancan 11-3.
Cancan was hardly hit by Jayasinghe in the first three rounds where Cancan recorded marginal victories 4-1, 3-0 & 3-0 respectively. Though Jayasinghe was triumphant in the fourth round as she defeated Cancan by 2-1, Cancan managed to clinch the winning title by a record margin of 11-3.
Ren Cancan who was the world champion, back in 2008 has stimulated hopes for a Second World title.
Both Anusha Kodithuwakku and Nilmini Jayasinghe were the first to be invited for the AIBA Women’s World Championships, in the country’s boxing history.
